NAPW Celebrates International Women's Day!

On International Women’s Day, NAPW celebrates the power of women throughout the world. We honor the strength, wisdom, and resilience of the women who came before us. Today and every day, the NAPW team is committed to fighting for the human and civil rights, health and welfare of all people - including pregnant women.

Our work spans the globe from local to international. We provide pro-bono criminal defense for pregnant women in the U.S. who are charged with crimes in relationship to their pregnancies – whether they have an abortion, experience a pregnancy loss, or give birth. NAPW knows that the cases we take on are not about a single woman or a single right. Each arrest or other misuse of state power over pregnant people reflects a larger political effort to distract attention from the U.S. government's failure to address the real threats – economic injustice, lack of universal health care, and the failure to protect our environment and infrastructure.

On the international level, we work with allies to write and organize amicus briefs on behalf of women incarcerated in El Salvador because they had miscarriages or stillbirths. NAPW researches and helps to write reports to United Nations working groups, committees, and commissions that document how the U.S. government mistreats pregnant women. NAPW documents and exposes discrimination against pregnant women and criminalization of them. These reports not only call attention to U.S. obligations to protect human rights but also contribute to developing the body of international human rights standards and principles that recognize and protect the rights to bodily integrity, health, and to privacy.
Today we celebrate -- and every day we advocate, organize, and educate.

We hope you join us:

1) In our fight to ensure that no person is “locked up because they are knocked up!”

2) By supporting our April 15 event No Going Back!
