Treatment vs. Jail in Alabama

December 10, 2010

More than 40 pregnant, allegedly drug-using women in Alabama have been arrested and charged with "chemically endangering" the fetuses they carried. The chemical endangerment law was passed to create penalties for adults who bring children to drug labs, not to address the public health issues raised by pregnant women and drug use. The red markers on the map above show every county that has a jail or prison. The blue markers show the counties that have drug treatment programs that claim they provide services for pregnant or parenting women. NAPW thinks there is something wrong with this picture and we hope you do too..
