Legal Internships

January 01, 2017

NAPW hires law students throughout the year, with priority to students from outside of the NYC metro area and 2L applicants during the summer.

Organization: NAPW works to secure the human and civil rights, health and welfare of all women, focusing particularly on pregnant and parenting women, and those who are most vulnerable - low income women, women of color, and drug-using women. NAPW uses integrated strategies, including litigation and legal advocacy, local and national organizing and public education to ensure that women do not lose their constitutional and human rights as a result of pregnancy; that women have access to a full range of reproductive health services, including abortion and non-punitive drug treatment; that children are not needlessly separated from their families on the basis of medical misinformation; and that the war on drugs is not expanded under the guise of fetal rights or family protection.

Details: Internships are generally full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year. NAPW does not generally provide a stipend, so interns should seek their own funding. Past interns have helped free pregnant women from prison, developed arguments against anti-abortion/fetal rights personhood measures, challenged punishment of women who refuse cesarean surgery, researched prosecutions of women for continuing their pregnancies to term in spite of a drug or other health problem, and participated in a wide variety of cross issue meetings, seminars, and demonstrations.
